Beckman boys basketball team captures share of PCL crown and La Habra and Cypress win outright league titles

Beckman’s boys basketball team clinched a share of its first Pacific Coast League championship with an 81-54 victory over University Tuesday night.

Beckman (now 18-8, 7-2) and Northwood were tied for first place in the league going into the game, but Irvine knocked Northwood (now 13-13, 6-3) into second place with a 47-40 double overtime victory.

Dylan Thoerner scored 18 points, Christopher Muller had 16 points and Shubh Khandhadia added 13 points for Beckman. Aamaan Soma had 11 points and Tommy Feldman 10 points for the Patriots.

University (13-14, 2-7) was led by Andrea Roy with 17 points, Arjun Gill with 14 points and Kody Uyesugi with 10 points.

“We executed our game plan nearly perfect tonight,” said Beckman Coach John Goins. “We wanted to take Uyesugi out so we had 6-6 Dylan Thoerner guard him, limiting his ability to get any clean looks. We were able to take advantage of our size at the rim and limited our shots to high percentage ones in the paint. I don’t think we shot more than eight three’s and we hit four of them.

“Now we go to Northwood on Thursday and try and take possession of the league championship. It will be a great environment and the boys are looking forward to it.”

La Habra 57, Sonora 56: The Highlanders (24-2, 9-0) captured the Freeway League title with a thrilling victory at Sonora.

Ja’len Overstreet had 18 points and three 3-pointers, Cameron Dashiell had 14 points and two 3-pointers to lead La Habra.

Jesse Stines led Sonora (19-8, 7-2) with 19 points.

Stines hit a 3-pointer with 3.7 seconds left to give Sonora the lead.  Cam Dashiell hit a 3 at the buzzer for the win, according to La Habra Coach Aaron Riekenberg.

“Wow, just wow,” Riekenberg said. “It doesn’t get any bigger than that shot that Cam hit. He deserves it, he’s a four-year varsity guy and he’s had some tough losses in this gym. He puts in more work than any kid I’ve ever coached and tonight it paid off. I think we were down 10 when Sam fouled out with about four minutes left and we just kept fighting.

“We couldn’t make a shot in the first half and they outworked us for three quarters. We found a way to get it done in the fourth, to make up a 13 point deficit in the fourth quarter in their gym with a league title on the line…..it just doesn’t get any better than this.”

Cypress 69, Kennedy 40: Anthony Tello scored 14 points, Jared Brown had 11 points and Zain Sheik had 11 points and three 3-pointers to lead the Centurions, who won the Empire League title outright.

The Centurions (25-2, 9-0) set the school record with their 25th.

“The boys have worked so hard to get here. I am so proud of them, and the culture they have created for Cypress,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell.
