Friday night hoops: Cypress, Tesoro, Newport, Beckman and San Clemente notch league victories

Cypress boys basketball team kept rolling in Empire League play defeating Kennedy 75-30 Friday night.

Jared Brown had 24 points and made 11 of 11 free throw attempts for Cypress. Clifton Patterson had 15 points and Christian Kim nine for the Centurions (20-2, 4-0), who share the league lead with Crean Lutheran.

Kennedy fell to 7-12 overall and 0-4 in league.

Beckman 47, Northwood 37: Dylan Thoerner, who earlier today commited to Tufts University in Boston (click here to see the story) scored 19 points to lead Beckman (15-6, 4-0) who are atop the Pacific Coast League standings. Aaman Soma had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Patriots.

The two teams came in undefeated in PCL play.

Northwood (10-11, 3-1) was led by Amit Flint with 20 points and six 3-pointers.

“We were up 21-12 at halftime, and I was very happy with our defensive effort,” said Beckman Coach John Goins. “Any time you are able to hold a quality team like Northwood to 12 points in a half, you know you are doing something right. Obviously I’d like to see us score a few more points, but we’ve stressed defense all year so I can live with an off night offensively if we are on point defensively.

“Flint for Northwood caught fire in the fourth quarter and hit four 3’s in succession, keeping the game close, but we were able to hit 11 of 12 free throws in that quarter and put the game away. I thought we executed our defensive game plan about as well as we could and now we move on and get ready to run with University next Tuesday.

Tesoro 51, Dana Hills 38: The Titans improved their record to 14-4 overall and 3-0 in the Sea View League with a 13-4 run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Triston Broughton had 13 points, Noah Honetschlager 12 points and 12 rebounds and Tyler Broughton nine points for Tesoro.

Newport Harbor 63, Los Alamitos 56: The Sailors (21-1, 1-0) won a Surf league game at Los Alamtos. Robbie Spooner scored 15 points, Dayne Chalmers had 14 points and eight rebounds and Levi Darrow scored 12 points and went 8 for 8 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Sam Barela had 13 points and seven assists for Newport Harbor.

San Clemente 53, Capo Valley 47: The Tritons improved their record to 1-1 in the South Coast League. Andrew Herbert had 22 points, Mario Medrano 10 and Jack Carroll eight points.
