“Our defense kept them from scoring for right around three quarters, even with a couple of short fields to defend,” said Beckman Coach Marcello Giuliano. “Our young secondary stood up to a really tough test by Irvine’s terrific QB/WR play, and we were able to get pressure when we needed it.

“Josh Carter recovered a fumble and produced a lot of blitz pressure. Jake Oswald had another terrific night on the line that included a few TFLs and a sack.”

Beckman (4-3 overall) also made progress on offense, the coach said.

“Offensively, we wanted to get our running game back on track,” Giuliano said.  “Our offensive line, tight ends, and wide receivers all blocked whistle to whistle which enabled us to put up nearly 300 rushing yards.  We had a lot of contributors in the running game, including Jett Daviss with two rushing TDs, Jason Cheng with two rushing TDs and Carlos Dubon who scored his first TD of the year.”

Davis carried 15 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Dubon had 12 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown and Cheng had 11 carries for 61 yards and two touchdowns.

Irvine (0-7, 0-2) was led by quarterback Beck Moss, who completed 21 of 38 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown. Kade Zimmerman had eight receptions for 98 yards, Jacob Sears had five catches for 43. yards and Samuel Dimaculangan had four catches for 41 yards.

“We went into the game thinking we had a shot at them but the mistakes and a few penalties set them up pretty well,” said Irvine Coach Tom Ricci. “They are well coached and we knew we couldn’t afford to make mistakes. With our lack of experience, we have to play a pretty flawless game to be successful right now.  We are so close, we just need to trust the process.”

Beckman plays Woodbridge at University while Irvine (0-7, 0-2) hosts University on Friday night.
