Vega, who is just a sophomore, played with the experience of a senior with a school record-setting performance  to help lead the Jaguars to a 59-13 victory over Marina in the Big 4 opener at Segerstrom.

Vega threw a school record five touchdown passes and scored another on a run for the Jaguars (7-1, 1-0).

He completed 14 of 22 passes for a school record 359 yards. Vega also had five carries for 16 yards and a TD.

“He’s playing at a high level right now and we’re excited what what he has been able to do on the field,” Tagaloa said. “As long as he has the hot hand, we’re going to try and let him make the plays.”

Vega now holds the record for most TD passes in a game, season and career, Tagaloa said.

“We’re a little run heavy coming into this year but he has definitely come out here and competed,” Tagaloa said.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday but postponed because of rain and lightning.

“It starts off with the O-line,” Vega said. “They gave me all the time that I needed to complete all the passes. This is the first game I’ve thrown over three touchdown passes. It was a great team win, our first league win being 1-0. We have the weapons so that we can throw. Iverson (Fuiava) is leading the team in touchdowns and yards and (Andrew) Schouw is right behind him.”

After Segerstrom moved ahead 7-0, Marina (0-1, 2-6) tied the game 7-7 when John Robinson hauled in a 15-yard TD pass from quarterback Jack Miller.

But the Jaguars responded when Vega connected with Schouw on an 84-yard TD pass. Anthony Gomez then ran in for a 2-point conversion.

The Jaguars then moved ahead 18-7 when Gomez made a 35-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, Vegas’s 1-yard TD put the Jaguars ahead 25-7. He then hooked up when 3-yard TD pass to Schouw to made it 31-7.

Marina got on the scoreboard when Miller connected with Nathan Pendleton on a 16-yard TD late in the first half.

Segerstrom dominated the second half and a running clock was used in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars took a 45-13 lead when Vega connected with Fuiava on a 22-yard TD play.

The Jaguars moved out to a 52-13 lead on a 50-yard TD run by Daniel Stewart with 7:15 remaining in the third quarter.

The Jaguars’ Jacob Rodriguez capped the scoring with a 10-yard TD run later in the quarter.

“Our league is tough,” Tagaloa said. “Marina is tough, they played tough all night. Hats off to them. We have nothing but respect for those guys. They came in here and competed. We just made plays tonight which was the difference in the game.”
