Capistrano Valley’s new football coach Sean Curtis was back on familiar ground Thursday leading his Cougars in summer passing league games at Northwood, where he used to play and coach.
“It’s been great, it’s been like going down memory lane seeing a lot of the same coaches who were here when I was here playing,” Curtis said after the scrimmages. “There are a lot of good people, it feels like family, it feels like coming home. The facility upgrades they’ve done are awesome and it’s good to see the program is in good hands with Coach (Paige) Nobles.”
Curtis is a 2006 graduate of Northwood. He began his career working as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Northwood working for his father, Rick Curtis, who was then the head coach and now is the head coach at Capistrano Valley Christian.
“I like what they’re doing from a coaching staff standpoint so I’m excited to see what success they’re about to have this next season,” Curtis said. “I always keep an eye on Northwood. I’m excited about what they got going over here.”
Curtis, who has been an assistant coach at Santa Margarita and JSerra, said he is looking forward to his first head coaching job.
“I am excited, football is important down there,” Curtis said. “The staff and administration is all behind me. We have a new turf field going in this year and putting in a new team room and new weight room so everybody is really excited about where the program is about to go.
“And they’ve had a lot of success. They’re one of the only teams in Orange County that has been to three straight semifinals. So the expectations are to win and everybody has been around that environment where winning is important, so I have all the support that you would want as a new head coach.”
Curtis believes he’s ready for the challenge.
“I don’t have all the answers but I know coaching under my dad has hopefully groomed me for this for the last several years so I’m excited about the challenge,” he said. “Capo Valley is a historic program with a lot of tradition so I’m blessed to be able to take over a program like that in my first go at it.”
