Irvine, CdM, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo and Portola win; Wilson pitcher throws no-hitter vs. Woodbridge

Irvine High’s baseball team improved its record to 2-1 with a 4-1 tournament victory over Westminster Monday afternoon.

The Vaqueros received a solid pitching performance from Ryan Barlow, who allowed one earned run, gave up three hits and struck out five. He did not walk a batter.

Miles Malohn went 2 for 3 with a single and a double and JC Allen made his debut, recording a single in his first varsity at bat which knocked in a run for the Vaqueros, according to Coach Gabriel Cota.

“We played well enough to win, but are still working hard to find our identity,” said Cota. “We have some great leadership, but we need to figure out what separates us from everyone else. Luckily, we have a few games between now and the time we start league to find out what we are all about.”

Irvine plays at Diamond Bar on Tuesday.

Also Tuesday:

Long Beach Wilson 6, Woodbridge 0: Long Beach Wilson’s junior pitcher Jacob Ribitzki, in his first varsity start, threw a no-hitter against Woodbridge in the Loara Tournament.

“Their pitcher competed really well today,” said Woodbridge Coach Ryan Brucker, who saw his team fall to 2-2. “He was commanding three pitches for strikes all game long which made it tough on our hitters. He was able to throw a lot of first pitch change-ups and curve balls for strikes and it kept us off balance.

“Sometimes you have to tip your cap to the other team. Wilson out-competed us today in an all phases. Beautiful thing about baseball is there is always another game and an opportunity to get better. We hope to get back on track tomorrow.”

Woodbridge plays at Loara on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Corona del Mar 4, Roosevelt 1: The Sea Kings won the first game Monday morning.

Tom Wilcox went four innings giving up one run and striking out five to record the win. Ryan Borquez threw the final three innings allowing just one hit. Luc Stuka was 2-for-3 with an RBI, stolen base, and two runs scored.

“Carter Haight had a big double in the seventh to start a rally that led to two insurance run,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey.

The Sea Kings then continued their Monday road trip with a game at St. Paul. It ended in a 0-0 tie after three innings.

“The teams played three full innings,” said McCaffrey. “The Sea Kings loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fourth and then the rain came. The umpires called the game at this point as the field was too wet to play after about 20 minutes of rain.

“Jennings Torgelson started the game and had only allowed one hit through the first three innings.”

CdM (3-0-1 overall) continues play in the tournament on Wednesday.

Laguna Hills 5, Buena Park 0: Connor A’Hern had a complete game shutout for Laguna Hills which evened its record at 2-2.

Portola 11, Santa Ana Valley 0: Five Bulldog pitchers combined for a no-hitter in a Newport Elks Tournament game. (Please click here to read the story).
