The event started at 7 p.m. and lasted until the following morning at 10.

“Midnight madness is a tradition that Erik (former coach Terry) started when he came to Irvine,” said first year-coach Tom Ricci. “I thought it was great and wanted to continue it. The team is broken into the 12 squadrons.

“The squadrons compete in a variety of competitions throughout the evening, everything from obstacle courses to sack races to something like a human version of the hungry, hungry hippos.”

The winning squad in the competition received tickets to the UCLA vs. San Diego State football game, Ricci added.

The festivities wrapped up with a morning practice and then parents provided breakfast which they prepared for the players, Ricci said.
