Summer passing test

University’s Julius Juang picks up yardage Tuesday as Irvine’s Dany Frukacz tries to make the stop.

Irvine’s football team hosted University, Tesoro and La Quinta for a summer passing league tournament on Tuesday, July 10 at Irvine Stadium.

On this day, it wasn’t about final scores or tackling: there wasn’t any, but about running routes and preparing for the start of the 2018 season.

“We always try to invite all the PCL guys to come over at some point this summer, it just depends on their schedule,” said Irvine Coach Erik Terry. “It’s fun because we’re trying to promote football within the city and we want to build that brotherhood. We want to compete on a Friday night but we want these guys to have that football identity together.”

Each team got 10 plays on offense and 10 plays on defense with their first group and then 10 on offense and 10 on defense with their back-ups and JVs in each game with each team playing each other.

“I think we’re still learning, we’ve got a lot of guys who are relatively new to their positions at the varsity level,” Terry said. “And when we put our seconds in, they’re coming up from freshman football so they’re really trying to grasp what’s going on. I think we get better each time we do this. How much better, kind of remains to be seen until we get the video out.

“We video these things because that’s the best teaching tool we have but I liked a lot of the the things our guys did in terms of playing and not backing down from opponents.”

Irvine’s starter Marc Filia and back-up Beck Moss saw playing time Tuesday.

“This summer is about him fine tuning some things and getting Beck Moss comfortable to be the backup,” Terry said.

University was led by starting quarterback Thomas Keeling and back-up Austin White.

First year Coach Scott Meyer was pleased with his team’s progress.

“We had great football Tuesday night,” Meyer said. “We are always learning and building as a team. It’s great competing against other good programs. We’ve come a long way since we started in May.”
