Segerstrom hopes to keep winning ways going against Artesia

Segerstrom football players go through workouts Monday afternoon.

Segerstrom’s football team hopes to continue its solid play Friday night when it hosts Artesia Friday night for homecoming at 7 p.m.

The Jaguars are 5-1 following a 64-20 victory over University Friday night at Segerstrom.

“The team is playing hard, we have a lot of good leadership from our upper classmen keeping us on the right path,” said Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa.

“As long as we continue to push each other here at practice when it comes gametime, we’ll be ready.”

Artesia (4-1) is coming off a 46-26 victory over El Dorado last week. The Pioneers also defeated Westminster 51-24 earlier this year.

“Artesia looks tough,” Tagaloa said. “We watched them on game film. They’re very athletic and they make a lot of good teams look average. We’re going to have to go out there and play our game, play some Jaguar football, be disciplined and fundamentally sound and execute in all facets of the game.

“If we can do that, we will have a chance to win.”

It will be Segerstrom’s final nonleague game. The Jaguars have a bye next week before opening up Big-4 play Friday, Oct. 12 against Marina at Segerstrom.

“(Garden) Grove has been looking really good this year,” Tagaloa said. “Marina has had some tough losses, but they’ve been in every game they’ve played and Westminster is competing and they’re getting better every week so it’s going to be a dogfight. Everybody is coming out here putting their best on the field and leaving it on the field.

“I’m excited to get out there and see where we stand in terms of our league and this new conference.”
