Segerstrom High’s football team has a busy couple weeks in preparation for the start of the football season in the fall and will culminate the month with the Jaguars’ annual alumni game on campus.

“It has been going great so far,” said Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa. “This weekend we are going out to Paso Robles to compete in a 7 vs. 7 tournament and lineman competition.

“We have had many athletes participating in the various college camps locally, most recently last weekend at Azusa Pacific. A couple of our guys are in Utah right now at the BYU camp (Iverson Fuiava and Fiti Tauiliili) and one of our quarterbacks (Angel Vega) is flying out to Notre Dame’s camp on Saturday.

“All in all we are trying to best prepare our guys to compete this upcoming season. We will be observing our dead period beginning July 1, so we have a couple weeks left of summer before we report back for fall camp.”

Next week, Segerstrom will host La Quinta and Fairmont Prep Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a 7 vs. 7 event. Then, the Jaguars will travel to Baldwin Park on Thursday, June 20 before going to Newport Harbor for a final competition on Thursday, June 27.

Then on Friday, June 28, Segerstrom will hold its annual alumni game.

“Our alumni game is generally a fun time where our alumni come out and play a one-hand touch 7 vs. 7 format,” Tagaloa said.

“We welcome all players from previous classes. The last two years we have had a great turn out with our alumni winning both games. We post stuff on social media in hopes to get as many people as possible out. Having coaches on staff that are alumni, helps get the word out as well as motivate those guys on the team to come out and try to beat some of their coaches.

“I had a couple alumni reach to me since the post. One of the seniors from the graduating class of my first season as head coach, Denilson Santamaria hopes to make it out. So with any luck we will get a good group of guys out there and see whether age trumps youth again.”

Tagaloa said the game has attracted a solid turnout in past years.

“Last year we had our first ever quarterback in school history Ricky Martinez make it out, with our first ever three-time team MVP Frankie Partida in attendance as well,” he said. “Obviously, we welcome our former players to compete, but we also welcome them to show up and hang out.”

Segerstrom opens the season on Friday, Aug. 16 against Fullerton at Segerstrom.
