Western High’s football team will keep The Bell for another year.

The Pioneers made sure of that Friday night, defeating Anaheim 49-0 in the annual Bell Game and notching the team’s third shutout in a row this season. It’s the sixth victory in a row for Western in the Bell game.

The game matched up the teams who come from the two oldest schools in Anaheim: Anaheim and Western with the winner keeping the bell for another year. The Bell series started in 1961. The two teams started playing in 1959.

Caine Savage caught a touchdown, threw a touchdown and had an interception returned for a touchdown for the Pioneers (3-1).

Quarterback Isiah Del Toro threw two touchdowns, Simi Ah-Loe ran for two touchdowns and Cassius Savage had two touchdown catches, including one from his twin brother, said Western Coach Dan Davidson.

Danny Walters had eight tackles, two sacks and a blocked punt. Soane Motuliki also had an interception. MJ Cabusao returned his interception for a score.

Anaheim fell to 1-2 overall.

Western players celebrated winning the bell after the game.

“The first Bell game was played in 1961,” said Davidson. “The ASBs from each campus got together and decided a trophy needed to be given to the winner each year.

“The Rotary Club of Anaheim contributed the original train bell which had been beautifully restored….it is inscribed ‘Presented by the Atcheson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company, 1961.’ The winner paints it in their school colors, it is rung during the game and given to the victor of the game.”

Western holds a 28-26 lead in the series and there was one tie.
