Northwood’s freshman goalie Sanjana Venkatesh gets ready to make a save.
The Northwood girls water polo team finished up the first round of Pacific Coast League play with a 10-3 win over Irvine Tuesday.
Northwood is now 8-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Senior co-captain, Amanda Nguyen, scored a team high four goals and her younger sister, freshman Lauren Nguyen, scored three goals. Junior Hannah Miller scored two goals while freshman Mia Tomovic had one goal.
Defensively, Tomovic (six steals) and Junior Sarah Buting (five steals) denied Irvine’s offense a number of opportunities. Freshman goalie Sanjana Venkatesh continued her impressive season with six saves.
“Last time we played Irvine, we had a number of starters out with injuries and they took advantage of that,” said Northwood Coach Kyle Kim-E. “It was nice to not only avenge that game, but also execute our offensive strategy the way that it is supposed to be run.
“We have a solid team defensively, but we are still working on our offensive system. It’s nice that it’s coming together, especially since the second round of league play starts this week. We look to continue improving with each practice and game, and it’s nice to see that it’s working.”
