Los Osos breaks it open in third quarter and tops Northwood 45-7

Los Osos was led by (from left) Destin Harston, Keyshon Clark and Donta Staten Jr. in a 45-7 win over Northwood Thursday night.

A talented Los Osos football team lived up to its billing Thursday night, defeating Northwood 45-7 in a nonleague game at Irvine Stadium.

The Grizzlies (2-0) led 14-7 at halftime and then broke the game open outscoring Northwood 24-0 in the third quarter.

Los Osos is in CIF Division 5 and Northwood Division 12.

Keyshon Clark led Los Osos with three touchdowns and 170 yards rushing.

“It was a big night rushing wise,” said Coach Alex Pierce. “I think in the first quarter obviously we had a lot of problems (with penalties). I think we had four touchdowns called back. We got to fix that. But overall Clark was able to get us moving and that allowed other people to start making plays.”

Quarterback Donavan Smith was also solid passing for 77 yards and a touchdown. Dorian Martin rushed for 105 yards and had a 50-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Destin Harston hauled in three catches for 37 yards.

Northwood (1-1) took the early lead when quarterback Tanner Buck connected with Travis Arena on an 80-yard TD pass.

But Los Osos countered with TD runs of 4 and 1 yards by Clark to take the lead at halftime.

Buck wound up passing for 164 yards. However, Northwood was victimized by two interceptions.

“We went up 7-0 and it was exciting,” said Northwood Coach Pete Mitchell. “And we hung for a half, we just made some blunders. We’re young and very inexperienced. Even a lot of our seniors haven’t played much so were very inexperienced and it showed in the second half. We made a lot of mistakes.”

Buck passed for 164 yards.

Arena had four catches for 93 yards and Seth Locke six catches for 60 yards.

Northwood came into the week ranked sixth in Division 12. Los Osos was not ranked in Division 5.
