IGSA 10-and-under team finishes with solid showing

The Irvine Girls Softball Association all-star team poses for a picture.

The Irvine Girls Softball Association 10-and-under Silver all-star team earned a berth to the Junior Olympic Regional Games in San Diego by doing well in the USA “C” State Tournament last month in Lancaster.

League President Greg Sasaki said, “I’m proud to say our 10 and under Silver all-star team placed seventh out of 42 teams in the state; we have so much talent in IGSA overall and our depth showed on the field of competition.”

The IGSA all-stars then played in the  Regional Junior Olympic games in San Diego this past weekend.  At that tournament the IGSA girls finished in fifth place out of 21 teams from all over the Western United States.

The all-stars  started the regional games by defeating Redwood City in game one with Cate Medvitz and Addison Day driving in four runs each.

In the second game, Irvine faced Paso Robles and won 6-5 with a walk off fielder choice by Medvitz.  Pitcher Amelia Hoang was the winning pitcher for Irvine.

In the third game, Irvine won again. Maggie McEwen had 3 hits and four RBI’s to pace the Irvine offense.  Sydney Weitzman was the winning pitcher for IGSA.

On Sunday the Irvine girls then lost to Crescenta Valley ending their title hopes but securing a fifth place finish.  Katie Chamkasem, Harper Vandermolen, and Cate Medvitz had the Irvine hits. The IGSA girls finished with a 22-10 record over the 10 week all-star season.

Irvine Coach Sarah Weitzman said, “What made this team so great was that all the girls contributed in their own way and on any given day we had a different hero.”

The team consisted of Katie Chamkasem, Addison Day, Amela Hoang, Marissa Lee, Megan Liu, Maggie McEwen, Cate Medvitz, Alyssa Patchen, Evelyn Shen, Harper Vandermolen, Reese Villanueva, and Sydney Weitzman.

The coaching staff included head coach Sarah Weitzman and assistant Coach Ed Lee and Debbie Chamkasem.
