It was quite a season opener for the Laguna Hills football team.

The Hawks exploded for 34 points in the second quarter and went on to defeat University 46-6 Friday night in a nonleague game at University.

It was the opening game for both teams and the first for new University Coach Scott Meyer.

Laguna Hills quarterback Matt Der torossian passed for 115 yards and one touchdown and ran for another and receiver Mitch Leigber hauled in seven catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

“It was a great start, I didn’t know what to expect,” said Laguna Hills Coach Mike Maceranka. “I knew we had some great weapons but when you get in a real game you have to protect and you have to throw and we threw the ball pretty well tonight.

“So we have a lot to work on, but it’s a great start.”

University had some life early on.

Ethan Bell scampered 60 yards on a fake punt on the Trojans first drive to the Laguna Hills 3-yard line. But the drive eventually stalled at the 2.

It was the beginning of a tough night for University, which had three turnovers.

The Trojans quarterback Thomas Keeling connected with Daniel Fernandez on a 75-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to break the shutout.

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

“It just got away from us early, there were just a lot of our mistakes,” Meyer said. “It got really sloppy and we turned the ball over. There was a lot of stuff that we need to clean up. For a lot of guys, this was their first varsity game. I told them, all we can do is learn from it and we got to be better next week. We really made an awful lot of mistakes that were big mistakes that cost us.”

Laguna Hills had another key play in the first half when it executed a double pass. Der torossian flipped the ball to Hayden McKenna, who connected with Marcus Daniels on a 54-yard TD pass to put the Hawks ahead, 20-0 with 7:08 left in the second quarter.
