Capistrano Valley Christian’s football team lost a wild one on Friday night, falling to St. Monica 49-35 at Santa Monica College in the season opener for both teams.

“Our kids played very hard against a talented St. Monica Mariner team, one that had a few transfers come in during the off season,” said Capo Valley Christian Coach Rick Curtis.

“With our returning starting quarterback, Tyler Henry, sidelined for a couple of weeks with a back injury the offense still rolled up close to 400 yards and 35 points.”

The Eagles tied the game 35-35 at the start of the fourth quarter but were unable to finish with a victory.

“With most all of our guys going three ways (offense, defense and special teams) we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter,” Curtis said.

Capo Valley Christian got a strong effort from back-up Noah Richie, who Curtis said was playing “in his first football game of his life.”

“He filled in admirably for Henry and was 11 of 21 for 158 yards and three touchdown passes.”

Rome Demongin led the rushing attack, carring the ball 33 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns. Curtis added.

“Simeon Marton, who is being recruited by several Division I and II programs, was our player of the game as he hauled in seven passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns.

“Marton also blocked two extra point attempts and returned three kickoffs for 89 yards along with a 25-yard punt return that set up the Eagles in great field position.”

Capo Valley Christian gave up two kickoff returns for touchdowns and a couple of long passes and runs for scores, Curtis said.

The Eagles travel to Oro Grande to take on Riverside Prep Friday at 7 p.m.
