University High officials plan to begin a search for a new football coach following the resignation of head coach Chris Hernandez after one full season.
Hernandez announced his resignation Friday and the story was reported Saturday by OC Sports Zone. The former coach said he is moving with his family to South Dakota at the end of the spring season. Hernandez said he has a teaching job there and plans to coach football.
“University High School wishes Coach Chris Hernandez the best of luck with his relocation,” University Athletic Director Tom Shrake said Monday. “In the short time he led the Trojan football team, he made a lasting impact. It’s been a pleasure to work with him and he will be missed.
“We are beginning our search for a new head coach immediately and are committed to finding the best possible candidate. The athletes, students, parents and University High School community deserve strong leadership to grow our program and make it a positive and competitive experience.”
Hernadez said he still plans on helping the Trojan football players prepare in the weight room until a new coach can be hired.
