University’s boys tennis team rallied to defeat Harvard Westlake 10-8 at the Claremont Club to capture the CIF Open Division Tennis Championship on Friday.
It marks the Trojans ninth CIF title in 11 trips to to the finals. Between the girls and boys programs, University now has 12 crowns, according to Coach John Kessler.
University had to rally from a 7-5 deficit to capture the title.
“When you win, you realize how hard it is to get here,” said Uni Coach John Kessler. “There are so many good players and good teams out there, in our league. The PCL matches are so tough and prepare you for these moments.”
Junior Soomin Lee swept at second singles and clinched the match for the top-seeded Trojans, Kessler said.
It marked the 17th time that University has had a team in the CIF finals (11 for the boys and six for the girls), according to Kessler.
“Most impressive, we have had the girls and the boys in the CIF final the same year, three times,” Kessler said.
