Transfer numbers for CIF Southern Section athletes continue downward trend

As high school sports in Southern California remain on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, transfer numbers among athletes continued to drop significantly, according to final statistics for 2020 released Monday by CIF Southern Section officials.

The total transfer amount in the section decreased by 3,844 (77.40 percent), from 4,967 during the period of July through December of 2019 to 1,123 from July to December of 2020, officials said.

Transfer numbers declined by 387 in December of 2020 compared to December of 2019.

CIF officials are waiting for further guidance from California Department of Public Health officials, who have said high school sports cannot start until at least Jan. 25. State officials are expected to review their return to play guidelines soon. Sports are grouped into different tiers and counties would have to be in specific tiers for sports to return.

Although an update from the state was expected on Monday, Jan. 4, none was provided, according to Mark Cunningham, Irvine Unified School District Athletic Director. It is not known when the update will come.

CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod said that his next update will come on Tuesday, July 19.
