Savanna’s football team is having quite a season and all-purpose player Shamonte Rogers has been one of the big reasons.

The Rebels are 7-1 overall and tied for first place with Katella in the Orange League with a 3-0 record. Savanna meets Katella Thursday night. Savanna is fourth in this week’s CIF Division 13 poll.

“He’s a junior that is having a break out year,” said Coach Tom Ricci.  “No one has recruited him yet, but when recruiters came down for other players, everyone is like, who is that kid?”

Rogers had three rushing touchdowns and one passing TD in the Rebels victory against Santa Ana Valley.

He scored four in the previous game vs Magnolia and three in each of the two games before that.

“He had over 200 yards in each of the past five games,” Ricci said. “He’s a huge part of what makes this team work.  We are 7-1 right now and we utilize him on both sides of the ball. On defense he currently is at 55 total tackles, 31 solo tackles, 24 assisted tackles, 15 tackles for a loss and 10 sacks (a school record).” Rogers also has 11 quarterback hurries.
