Former Northwood QB Dan Selway wraps up youth football camp at the Great Park

Players at the Dan Selway Camp go through drills with NFL yoga instructor Rob Eyler with Dan Selway in the back.

Dan Selway was a very good quarterback at Northwood High before going on to become an All-American at Redlands and playing overseas in Europe.

Now, he’s trying to share his wisdom with future young quarterbacks and receivers. Selway wrapped up the second Dan Selway Youth Football Camp Wednesday at the Great Park. About 40 youngsters, grades 2-8 attended his second camp.

“The kids were from all over Southern California,” said Selway, who graduated from Northwood in 2005. “The kids are having so much fun. I feed off their energy sometimes. They just love the camp and that makes it all worthwhile and that’s kind of why I coach.

“We try to create an environment that is all skills and all abilities, but also competing. Because there are some really good eight graders and some beginners, so we separate them in groups and it doesn’t matter if you’re trying to become the best high school player in Orange County in a couple years of just learning some basic skills.

“Just today, we did eight different routes. We focus on running the 40, we do accuracy for our quarterbacks and we do route reviews for our receivers. It’s mostly all qbs and receivers.”

At the end of the camp, Selway planned to give out awards for accuracy and leadership, which he said are the “two most important things for quarterbacks.”

Selway was assisted by his wife, Andrea, who brought along the couple’s 11-month-old son Brady on Tuesday. The family resides in Lake Forrest.

“All the organization and check-in is Andrea,” Selway said. “None of this could even happen without Andrea. There is a lot of organizing to do to make this special for the kids. She does a lot of the finishing touches that I would never think of.

“We try to make everybody better. One of my friends (Rob Eyler) has been flown out to do yoga for the Dallas Cowboys. He was out here with the kids today. It’s pretty cool. I’m never surprised what a third and fourth grader can learn in one day.”

Football is a way of life for Selway, who coaches quarterbacks and wide receivers for a living. He is also prepared to assist Pete Mitchell Jr. as the co-offensive coordinator at Northwood this season.

“I’m very energized and excited,” he said. “It’s always fun to take on a new challenge and a new opportunity. We could go 10-0. Anything can happen. These kids have worked so hard.”
