Players from Century High were among those who took part in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase competing for the Orange League Saturday against the Golden West League at the Great Park Baseball Stadium.
Eduardo Ojeada, Henry Rojas, Anthony Olivares, Damien Chavez and Eddie Esquivel represented the Centurions along with Coach Theo Cortes, who was one of the coaches for the Orange League.
The Golden West League defeated the Orange League 2-0.
Olivares and Chavez of Century were among those pitching for the Orange League and Olivares had one of the hits.
It was the first time that the Orange League and Golden West League teams have been included in the three-day showcase which wrapped up Sunday.
“We’re really appreciative of the Ryan Lemmon Foundation,” said Cortes, the Century coach.
He said his players enjoyed the experience.
“They wish they would have gotten a couple more hits and a few more runs, but it was fun,” he said. “There was good pitching and good defense for the most part, a good clean game.”
Century had a memorable season finishing second to Katella in the Orange League. The Centurions advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CIF Division 5 playoffs, losing to Xavier Prep 5-4.
“The season was phenomenal,” Cortes said. “It ended in a sour note but no one can win them all, right? Only one team ends up winning the last game. It was a great season for us and I think it was a school record as far as the number of wins.”
Cortes is already looking forward to next season.
“We lose about five kids that played today, but we will be OK,” he said. “We will rebuild and figure it out. We got nine months to do it.”
