Portola boys take first, girls fourth at OC Swim Championships at JSerra

Portola’s boys and girls swim teams had memorable performances Saturday at the Orange County Swim Championships.

The boys team captured the championship while the girls took fourth, according to Portola Coach Kellie Lawicki and many records fell at the meet.

Top Portola boys finishers: 200 medley relay (3rd) – Jun Kim, Nicholas Puckett, Malcolm Loke, Zach Smay, 1:48.35; 200 freestyle – Bryce Nishikawa (1st – school record and meet record) 1:46.79; 200 freestyle – Ethan Ho (2nd) – 1:47.28; 200 individual medley – Ben Kim (1st ) – 2:05.58; 50 freestyle – Justin Pai (1st – new school record and meet record) – 21.90; 500 freestyle – Ethan Ho (1st – new school record) – 4:47.35; 500 freestyle – Bryce Nishikawa (2nd) – 4:53.83.

Boys 200 freestyle relay (2nd – new school record) – Ben Kim, Ethan Ho, Bryce Nishikawa, Justin Pai – 1:31.70; 100 breaststroke – Justin Pai (2nd); Boys 400 freestyle relay (1st – new school and meet record) – Justin Pai, Ben Kim, Ethan Ho, Bryce Nishikawa – 3:20.79.

Top Portola girls finishers: 200 medley relay (3rd – new school record) – Kai Wong, Gabi Taylor, Summer Sim, Haley Truong – 1:55.42; 200 individual medley – Gabi Taylor (1st – new school record) – 2:15.33; 100 butterfly – Kai Wong (3rd – new school record) – 1:01.55; 500 freestyle- Gabi Taylor (3rd – new school record) – 5:22.54; 100 backstroke – Kai Wong (1st – new school record) – 1:01.26; 100 breaststroke – Tiffany Lee (3rd) – 1:12.35.

“The goal of this meet was to see what we can do when we are at our peak of training,” said Lawicki, the Portola coach.

“We have been working so hard this past week and to see them get lifetime and season best times after being tired and sore was incredible. We are definitely eager to see what we can do at league (finals) in a few weeks when we’re rested.”
