Woodbridge High School coach Alan Ho is among the coaches who will be very busy in December if the new CIF plan can be implemented.

Ho coaches both the boys and girls volleyball teams at Woodbridge.

The plan was introduced on Monday by CIF officials and would have girls volleyball and boys volleyball seasons both being played in December. In order to take effect, school districts would have to open schools. Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered most schools to begin the fall with on-line courses only because of the rising coronavirus cases.

Boys volleyball would start on Dec. 12 and girls volleyball on Dec. 19. Boys volleyball traditionally starts in February or March and girls volleyball in August.

“I’m still not sure what it’s going to look like,” Ho said on Tuesday. “I’m waiting for guidance as to what season will look like. I envision a scenario where I would have practice for one group, then practice for another group.

“Matches could work if you have the boys and girls varsity play at the same site while frosh soph and JV play at the other site, kind of like the way boys and girls basketball has been doing with their league matches.

“I think there’s enough coaches out there that coach both boys and girls where this may present an issue. It might make us have to work a little harder to make it work but it’s worth it for the kids to be able to have a season.”
