Tesoro High School’s girls basketball team held off University to win 40-36 in the opening round in the South Division of the North South Girls Basketball Tournament Monday at Mission Viejo High School.
Tesoro led 24-10 at halftime, but the Trojans cut the margin to 30-25 with first-year coach Robert Chang at the helm. Uni couldn’t cut the margin below three and ran out of time.
Sophomore Caitlyn Tse led Tesoro with 17 points while Senior Jade McMahon added 11 points. Junior Rae Li and sophomore Selin Haytoglu led University with six points each while senior Julia Holmes had three points, 12 rebounds, four assists and four blocks.
Tournament action continues Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
