Northwood senior Jacob Huynh set many career scoring records.
Northwood’s Jacob Huynh, who set most career scoring records at the school during his four-year stint, signed to continue his career at San Francisco State. Huynh looks back with pride on his career and what he learned from Coach Tim O’Brien. “I feel like the basketball program is top notch, especially with O’Brien running the program,” he said. Huynh, most valuable player of the Pacific Coast League and second team all-county and all-CIF, led the Timberwolves to the league title and into the quarterfinal round of the CIF playoffs. He scored 1,638 points in his career at Northwood.
Talk about your decision to go to San Francisco State:
Huynh: I like the coach (who also played college basketball). I play a lot like him so I feel like he can help me improve a lot in the next four years and I really like the business program there. And when I went up there, the campus was really nice and I love the San Francisco area and I also have family up there.
What was your favorite game at Northwood all-time:
Huynh:It would probably be the Canyon (CIF playoff) game because it was such a high intensity game. And it was back and forth, nonstop and hitting that shot at the end was a great feeling. That game was just insane. I can’t explain it.
Describe yourself as a player:
Huynh: I would say like a point guard who can score from any range, like 3-point, mid-range and driving and I also help to get others involved through passing and my leadership.
What kind of work ethic is involved:
Huynh: I train a lot almost every day with various trainers. When I first started out in high school, I was training with Yousof Etemadi and Harry Wilson on ball handling and shooting. And the last couple of years I have been training with Kenny Franklin and Chris O’Brien. I worked with Kenny on my shot, creating space and ball handling. And I worked with Chris on weight training and nutrition to get in the best shape. All this training has helped elevate my game.
Talk about the support from your family:
Huynh: They’ve come to every game. They always cheer me on. You can always hear my mom in the crowd. They always support me no matter what. They supported my decision to go to San Francisco a lot because they love the area too.
How important is winning to you:
Huynh: Very important. It’s like the top thing that I want. It doesn’t matter if I score zero points or don’t do anything on the court. As long as we win, it’s good for me.
Who is your favorite NBA player:
Huynh: My favorite NBA player right now is Russell Westbrook. And my favorite team is Chicago Bulls.
