BECKMAN (2-2)
Last week’s score: Beckman 35, Crean Lutheran 14.
Offensive players of the week: Two top performers were quarterback Jason Cheng who threw for four touchdowns and running back Jett Daviss, who had 20 carries for 138 yards and one TD.
Defensive player of the week: Linebacker Omar Abdullah was very effective in the first half against their interior running game.
Special teams player of the week: “Jarel Coleman had a terrific night with three coverage tackles,” said Coach Marcello Giuliano.
Coach’s comment: “We continued to play very good defense and contained a solid Crean running attack,” Giuliano said. “On offense, we played a much more efficient game by reducing the self-inflicted wounds that have been plaguing us.
“We need to continue to build on these two elements in order to continue to improve and ready ourselves for the back half of our schedule.”
Beckman has a bye this week.
WOODBRIDGE (2-2)
Last week: Woodbridge 28, Pacifica 14.
Offensive player of the week: Elyjah Rush, eight catches for 116 yards and 11 rushes for 44 yards.
Defensive players of the week: Colin Turner, seven tackles; Roee Lachmish, five tackles and Arriel Eaves 99-yard interception return, a school record.
Special teams player of the week: Long snapper Andy Smith.
Coach’s comment: “Defensively we played very well vs.a very athletic offensive team,” said Coach Rick Gibson.
This week: Woodbridge faces Santa Ana Thursday night at 7 at Santa Ana Valley.
“Santa Ana a very physical team will be a challenge for us on both sides of the ball,” Gibson said.
NORTHWOOD (2-1)
Last week’s game: Northwood 41, Santa Ana Valley 10.
Top offensive player: Quarterback Jaden Piazza threw for three touchdowns and 150 yards and rushed for 45 yards
Top defensive player:Â Ayron Milgrom had two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown.
Top special teams player:Â Myles Carter
Coach’s comment: “We had an excellent effort on all phases of the game,” said Coach Pete Mitchell. “Our kids really came to play against a well coached Santa Ana Valley team.
This week: Northwood hosts Bolsa Grande Friday at 7 p.m. at Irvine Stadium. “We’re at home against a talented and well coached Bolsa Grande squad,” Mitchell said. “We will need to play well again if we are to win this one.
CREAN LUTHERAN (3-1)
Last week’s game: Beckman 35, Crean Lutheran 14.
Top offensive player:Â Nolan Folsom, nine carries, 70 yards, one rushing TD, one reception for 13 yards
Top defensive player: Tyler Buban, 14 tackles and eight assisted tackles.
Top special teams player: Connor Grace, 2 of 2 on point afters, two punts of 28 and 20 yards and three touchbacks.
Coach’s comment:Â “Good for our team to face a solid Beckman team and see some physicality,” said Coach Randall Reynoso. “It’s a good adversity for us moving into our homecoming game.”
This week: Crean Lutheran hosts Duarte Friday night at 7 at Portola. “It’s going to be a great night for our school,” Reynoso said. “Homecoming festivities will be happening all week and we will see if we can maintain focus and get it done on the field for our home crowd.”
PORTOLA (2-2)
Last week’s score: Whittier 61, Portola 0.
Top offensive player: Andy Lo, sophomore wide receiver who is, “making tremendous progress week to week as a consistent and reliable weapon for us,” said Coach Peter Abe.
Top defensive player: Kyle De Oliveira. sophomore linebacker who Abe said is, “growing into his own, setting the edge for our defensive front, and steadily learning how to finish like a varsity football player.
Top special teams player: Gowtham Krishnakumar, junior offensive lineman and linebacker. “His hustle, heart, work-ethic and never-quit attitude are helping to shore up the Bulldog kicking game.
Coach’s comment:Â “The Bulldogs ran into a tough Whittier team this past week who featured one of the best backs in the Southern Section,” said Abe. “In the end, the physicality and team speed of the Cardinals got the best of us. We look forward to getting back to work this week to close out our preseason with some positive momentum going into league.”
This week: Portola plays Webb Schools at Damien High School Friday night at 7.
“It’s our second of a trio of road games,” Abe said. ” It’s a talented team coming off of a quarter-finals berth in the 2017 CIF playoffs and looking better each week. The Bulldogs are up for the challenge as we continue to get ready for the Pacific Coast League.”
IRVINE (0-3)
Last week’s game: Huntington Beach 48, Irvine 14
Player of the week:Â “Dany Frukacz was our overall player of the week for his consistent play in all phases,” said Coach Erik Terry. “He made 9 tackles, one for a loss from his strong safety position on defense.
“He is a starter on five of six special teams. On offense he only had one carry and one reception but he did a great job in pass protection.”
Coach’s comment:Â “We definitely improved in certain areas of our game even though the scoreboard does not show that,” Terry said. “Huntington Beach is a an athletic and physical team and that helped us learn what we still need to work on.”
This week: Irvine plays at Dana Hills Friday at 7 p.m.  “Dana Hills is in our CIF Division so we are excited to see how we stack up against a like team,” Terry said. “They have some very talented skilled players and look well coached. The key for us is to focus on trust. We are really working hard at getting our guys to trust our staff, each other and the process of daily improvement.”
UNIVERSITY (1-2)
Last week’s score: Glenn 46, University 19.
Offensive player of the week: Quarterback Thomas Keeling passed for 311 yards and three touchdowns to Austin Lake, Daniel Fernandez and Jared Harlan.
Coach’s comment:Â “We improved offensively and are hoping to put our first complete game together with a great effort on offense, defense, and special teams,” said Coach Scott Meyer.
This week: University hosts Katella Friday night at 7 p.m. “Katella is the best team we have played so far so we need to improve quickly,” Meyer said.
TUSTIN (1-3)
Last week: Palm Springs 41, Tustin 7.
Offensive player of the week: Junior running back Matt Rodriguez, who had 15 carries for 96 yards.
Defensive player of the week:Â Junior Linebacker D’Anthony Franco, who had six tackles.
Special teams player of the week:Â Senior Safety Eean Garcia, who had two blocked PAT’s.
Coach’s comment: “It was a tough game, we’ve really been hit hard by injuries and have played a pretty tough non-league schedule,” said Coach Myron Miller.
This week: Tustin plays at Ayala Friday night. “It doesn’t get any easier this week when we travel to face Ayala, who has, on film, a very good team,” Miller said. “We’re hoping to put together a great week of practice and be prepared to do battle on Friday.”
