Boys and girls lacrosse will have CIF Southern Section championships for the coming school year, CIF commisioner Rob Wigod said in a report previewing what is ahead.
CIF schools have been participating in boys and girls lacrosse under the umbrella of U.S. Lacrosse, which has run post-season Orange County and Southern California tournaments. But Wigod said there was not the necessary number of schools (20 percent) participating in the sport for the CIF to have playoffs.
“That is not the case any more,” Wigod wrote in his report. “In May 2020, we will conduct our inaugural CIF Southern Section Boys and Girls Lacrosse Championships. We are excited to bring this new championship to our section and look forward to the great competition that is to come.”
In his letter to member schools and released to the media, Wigod also said:
-There is a shortage of officials to work CIF events for all sports and the section is trying to recruit new ones.
“We are launching a program to try and recruit new officials to join our ranks,” Wigod said.
The CIF has a link on its website for those interested.
-The CIF Transfer Rules Committee will come up with a review of the current state-wide transfer rules at its meeting on Aug. 14. At that meeting, a decision will be made whether to make any changes in the transfer rules or to keep them the same, Wigod said.
