Corona del Mar’s boys basketball program had what seemed to be a good-natured plan to help out a local charity and provide a lift for hospitalized children while encouraging school spirit.
After the first CdM basket Friday night against Newport Harbor, fans were asked to throw a new Teddy Bear stuffed toy onto the court at CdM.
Fans followed instructions and hundreds of Teddy Bears were thrown onto the court after the first CdM hoop.
However, it’s not clear yet who will receive the Teddy Bears. The local organization that CdM had intended to donate them too said it “cannot accept because they were on the floor, due to sterilization concerns,” according to CdM Coach Ryan Schachter.
So, Schachter said the program will look to find a group that can accept the donated Teddy Bears.
Newport Harbor won a thrilling Surf League opener in overtime 58-55.
