Capo Valley Christian boys basketball team faces two big challenges this week

It’s a big week for Capistrano Valley Christian’s boys basketball team.

The Eagles will have a neutral court game against Mayfair (9-9) Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Orangewood Academy in Garden Grove.

Capo Valley Christian will be the home team for the game, according to Athletic Director Rick Curtis.

“Mayfair has one of the top recruits in the country, Josh Christopher, who is averaging 31 points per game and they have a very big following,” Curtis said. “Our site would not handle the expected crowd for this contest, therefore, AD Leslie Aragon has offered us to use Orangewood Academy in Garden Grove.”

Capo Valley Christian Coach Chris Childress is a graduate of Mayfair, “making it a special game for him as well,” Curtis added.

It was quite a season last year for the Eagles who were 26-8 and captured the CIF 3A title, the first boys basketball crown for the school.

This year, the team has continued its winning ways.

Capistrano Valley Christian is 12-8 overall and has started off San Joaquin League play 2-0.

“The Eagles really started to come together on our recent trip to Vegas over the Christmas break,” Childress said. “We started the year with a 7-7 record and over our last six games we have gone 5-1. I feel like we are peaking at the right time. This year’s team is very balanced. We’re right on the cusp of having five players averaging double figures in points. This is a testament to our guys committing to playing as a team.” 

Among the top players are Luke Powell, who is averaging 17 points and six rebounds a game; Adam Garza (11 point average), Addy G’Bye (12 point average), Mac West (10 point averge) and Bence Duka (nine points, six rebounds a game average).

Capo Valley Christian also hosts Pacifica Christian Friday night at home.

“This is a very exciting time for CVCS,” Childress said. “We have the opportunity to show what we are made of and that we can compete with anyone. This is a fun group to coach and I’m very proud of the guys and their continued growth.

“We are happy with the progress that we have made as a team so far this year. To lose four starters from last year’s group and be where we are now says a lot about the culture we are creating here at CVCS.”
