OC Sports Zone: Community First

Woodbridge’s talented receiver-defensive back Jacob Nash is overall MVP of OC Sports Zone All-Irvine Football Team

Jacob Nash of Woodbridge is the overall MVP of the OC Sports Zone All-Irvine Football Team.

Woodbridge senior Jacob Nash made big contributions on both sides of the ball this past season, leading the Warriors to their first league title in 20 years.

On offense, Nash had 19 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns and also had 68 catches for 1,003 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned two kick-offs for touchdowns and had one punt return for a TD.

Nash, the overall Most Valuable Player of the OC Sports Zone All-Irvine Football Team, was also a corner back and had 27 tackles and five interceptions.

“It was a little challenging going both ways, just getting in shape for it,” said Nash, who was the MVP of the Pacific Coast League as well.

Nash prepared himself for the challenge of playing both ways and was outstanding.

“He is an extremely athletic two-way starter for three years,” said Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson. “He was one of the best players in WHS history. He does all things well but consistently works on the ‘little things’ with great hustle and willingness to do what is best for the team.”

Nash said he remembers the Beckman game the most in which Woodbridge was awarded a victory after a weather delay.

“I was able to score three times in a quarter,” he said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get to finish that game (because of lightning) but that was fun.”

Another game that stood out was the Warriors win over University, which helped Woodbridge clinch the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy and the league title.

“That night in the locker-room, everybody was just really happy,” he said.

Nash will soon be preparing to compete for Woodbridge in track in the 110 hurdles.

As for the future, he’s keeping his options open.

“I’m not sure yet, I’m talking to a couple of coaches, but nothing is certain yet,” he said.
