Irvine High’s baseball team solidified its hold on third place in the Pacific Coast League defeating University 7-0 Friday afternoon at Uni.
“It was an all around great performance for us today,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota. “(Brad, the Uni pitcher) Hodges is the real deal and we knew we were going to have to grind out every at bat. All players contributed to the win today and it was a great team win.”
Patrick Hackworth led Irvine, going 3 for 4 with a single, double, triple, three RBI and two runs scored.
Bubba Filia was 2 for 2 with a double, triple, walk, one RBI and two runs scored for the Vaqueros (13-7, 7-4). He was also hit by a pitch.
Yoni Bracha, who pitched the first three innings, got the victory, allowing one hit.
Leonard Memon pitched three innings, allowing one hit and struck out three. Edward Kole finished on the mound, allowing one hit.
University fell to 9-13 and 4-7.

Santa Ana 13, Saddleback 1: The Saints remained in the playoff hunt behind the strong pitching and hitting of senior Josue Sanchez, according to Coach David Silva. Garrett Gonzales, Kevin Gomez and Emilio Castaneda also hit well for the Saints (12-7, 7-4).
