Segerstrom’s football squad improved its record to 3-1 with a 33-7 non-league victory over Arlington Thursday night in Riverside.

“We got out to a slow start in the first half playing sluggishly and allowing Arlington opportunities to be successful,” said Segerstrom Coach Joseph Tagaloa.

“Our defense really kept us in the game coming up with three turnovers in the first half. The first came on a forced fumble by Isaiah Gomez and recovery by Anthony Gomez inside the red zone. Soon after, Alfredo Rivas returned an interception for a touchdown, which got our defense going. Joshua Garcia had an interception in the end zone to put an end to a potential Arlington touchdown drive.”

The Jaguars regrouped at halftime.

“We used halftime to really refocus and reiterate our game plan,” Tagaloa said. “Our offensive emphasis coming out in the second half was to cut out our mental mistakes. As a result Louis Garcia and Noah Martinez led touchdown drives using their legs and their arms. Luis Prado and Ayden Morales led the running game while Diego Garcia and Andrew Abarca provided the passing threat. Logan Rosales scored from 10 yards out to finish our last scoring drive.”

Tagaloa sees areas of improvement as the Jaguars prepare for next Friday’s game at home against Troy.

“Special teams struggled tonight, which is something that must be fixed in order to compete against a solid Troy team next wee,” Tagaloa said. “It’s going to take playing well at all three facets of the game in order for us to be successful.”
