A LOOK AT THE BECKMAN PATRIOTS
Last year’s overall, league record: 1-9, 0-5.
Coach, years: Marcello Giuliano, fourth year.
CIF playoff division: 11
What are your expectations of this year’s team: “I expect us to be significantly improved in the quality of football we play,” said Coach Marcello Giuliano. “There are certain timeless elements of the game that are requisite to winning and we have recommitted to them this season. Like everyone else, our goal is to compete for the Fence Post (Trophy) and our league’s playoff spots. We want to quality of our play to match those expectations, then let talent and character determine the score.”
Team strengths: “Even though we are going to be playing a lot of young guys again this season, we also have a lot of guys back that played significantly last season, so I think experience can be a strength. We also have most of our depth at interior line positions, so those guys need to be the engine of our success by allowing us to distribute the ball to players that can create plays for us.
“Provided we don’t get bitten by the injury bug, I think the real key is doing simple things better this year: ball security, blocking, tackling, striking etc. Our focus is on playing good, hard team football. If we take care of the fundamental stuff first, we have a lot of guys that can be impactful playmakers on both sides of the ball.”
