It’s a busy weekend of basketball at Sunny Hills High School with a full schedule of games in a Varsity Shootout on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3, according to Lancers Coach Joe Ok.
“We’ve always had lower level tourneys at Sunny Hills in the summer (JV, freshman) but wanted to start doing all levels and call it our ‘Summer Series’ of tourneys,” Ok said.
Tournaments could not be held last summer due to the coronavirus pandemic but this summer Sunny Hills is hosting three events for varsity, JV and freshman.
“Last weekend we had our 16-team freshman tournament,” Ok said. “This weekend we are having a varsity event in a shootout format. Every team will get three games over a two-day period.”
Sixteen teams are grouped in four-team pools.
Among the games on Friday at Sunny Hills are Sunny Hills vs. Pacifica Christian of Santa Monica at 6:50 p.m. and Beckman vs. La Mirada at 7:55 p.m.
On Saturday, the first game will be El Modena vs. La Habra at 8 a.m. At 9:05 a.m. Beckman 2 will face Anaheim. Sunny Hills 2 will meet California at 10:10 a.m. and United Christian Academy at 11:15 a.m.
Coach John Goins’ Beckman team will face La Serna at 12:20 p.m. and Holy Martyrs at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Sunny Hills will wrap up the tournament with games at 6:50 p.m. vs. Santa Fe and at 7:55 p.m. vs. Montebello Saturday night.
