University High’s girls flag football team, which was missing some key starters due to injuries, lost its CIF Division 2 playoff opener to Trabuco Hills last week in the opening round of the CIF Division 2 playoffs.
“An unfortunate end to our season after falling to Trabuco Hills 19-13,” said Coach Jeff Marchiorlatti. “I had mentioned the girls embracing ‘focus, sacrifice, grit’ and they certainly did so.
“After falling behind 12-0 early, the girls rallied back and stole momentum to make it 13-12. Then Trabuco had a late drive saved by a bobbled catch on fourth down to score a TD. It was a heartbreaker but I am incredibly proud of the girls.”
The coach said players stepped up for the injured players.
“The girls filled in admirably for our injured top performers, Arden Marchiorlatti, Carmen Cruz and Natalia Anania,” he said. “Three freshman really stepped up: Chloe Cho, Rianna Shbeeb and Ella Anderson with Chole being the MVP of the game. She was all over the field defensively and had a TD on offense. Elyse Mills continued her stellar season with a TD grab and Charlotte Beckmann had an extra point catch.
“Regardless of the outcome, this was an incredible group of student athletes to coach. It was an honor coaching them. I’m also very appreciative to our other coaches Jake DeLozier, Coby Schulman, Lem Bucago and our great boosters. We have a great foundation built and look forward to a bright future. We are only losing two seniors and return several league leaders in multiple statistical categories. The girls are already excited for spring ball and next fall.”
Trabuco Hills went on to defeat El Modena 31-20 Saturday and moves on to the quarterfinals Tuesday at home vs. Sonora.
