After dropping the first game 5-4 in 15 innings to Cerrritos College Saturday, the Santa Ana College baseball team bounced back with a 13-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Dons (5-4) jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first as Marc Shavone drove in two runs on a single to center field. In the third inning, Santa Ana added on with an RBI single to right field by Austin Haller to make it 3-0.
Both teams were held scoreless from then until the seventh, where the Dons broke it open, scoring 10 runs over the final three innings to close the game and secure the series split.Â
Bobby Ashworth got the start and went four innings striking out five. CJ Brown notched his second win of the year as he struck out two over four innings. Eddie Pelc finished the Falcons off with a scoreless ninth while adding two more strikeouts.Â
Thomas Williams played shortstop for the first time and made all the difference for the Dons. The sophomore went 3 for 5 with four RBI and two runs.Â
The Dons also got big production from their catchers. Mario Tostado had three hits while Connor Dietsch drove in three runs with three hits.Â
Men’s basketball team wins
Sophomore guard Miles Sulka had a season high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting to lift the Santa Ana College men’s basketball team to a win over the Riverside City Tigers (15-11, 8-6) 81-78 in Orange Empire Conference play on Friday night.Â
It was a back and forth but the Dons (10-16, 6-8) found a way to create enough separation in the final minutes of play. At the 2:04 mark, Zeyu Shan hit a cutting Kelvonte Ellis  who went through traffic to put SAC up by five (73-68) with the bucket and the free throw after the foul was called.Â
Riverside made a couple more runs and cut the lead to just one with 10 seconds left but clutch free throw shooting from Sulka and Jonavan Castellanos  helped the Dons win.
Volleyball team goes 1-1
The beach volleyball team opened the 2023 season by hosting the Rio Hondo Roadrunners (4-0) and the San Diego City Knights (0-2) at the Huntington Beach Newland Courts on Friday morning.Â
Santa Ana finished the day 1-1, falling to the Roadrunners by a score of 5-0 and then recovered with a 5-0 shutout over San Diego City.Â
Softball team notches win
Ale Guzman and Katie Nealand held the Southwestern Jaguars (2-6-1) to just one run, helping the Dons (1-3) softball team earn its first win of the 2023 season.
Guzman picked up the win with four and two thirds innings of work. The freshman from La Quinta High School gave up just two hits and an earned run in her first start of the year. Neal recorded her first save as she finished the last 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.Â
