Irvine and Woodbridge baseball teams captured victories on Wednesday to capture the first two games of their Pacific Coast League series. PCL teams play three game series this season on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
IRVINE VS. SAGE HILL
Irvine defeated Sage Hill 6-2 on Wednesday at Irvine.
“Adam Valencia was great on the mound going the complete game, giving up no earned runs, three hits and striking out eight,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota.
Offensively, the Vaqueros (3-3-1) were led by Evan Tamayo (1 for 3, two RBI, one run scored and a walk), Darren Shen (1 for 3, one RBI) and Adam Valencia (2 for 4).Â
The Vaqueros opened the series on Tuesday with a 7-2 victory at Sage Hill.
Sullivan Spivey threw the first two innings giving up one run and striking out one for the Vaqueros. Tamayo threw five innings to earn the win, allowing one hit and one unearned run while striking out five.
Tamayo was 3 for 3, Nate Valencia 2 for 3 with two RBI and a walk, Owen Featherston 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs scored and a walk and Ryan Sellards 2 for 3 with an RBI.
PORTOLA VS. UNIVERSITY
Portola defeated University 3-2 in a pitcher’s duel on Wednesday at Portola to even the series after University opened the series with an 8-0 victory at home on Tuesday.
Rocky Palacio pitched a complete game for Portola (4-4-1, 1-4) scattering six hits over seven innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out 10. Palacio was also the hitting star of the game with a 2-run go ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Bulldogs.
Austen Barnett threw five strong innings for University (5-3, 3-2) allowing one run while striking out five. Barnett also had a two-run 2 run triple in the fifth inning for the Trojans to put them on the board. Â
In Tuesday’s opener, the Trojans defeated Portola 8-0. Cooper Berger pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout. He struck out nine and walked two. Luke Weston was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a triple, Jameson Lobianco was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, Rivin Ruhanage was 2 for 4 with a run scored and a double, Austen Barnett was 1 for 3 with two runs scored, Chase Nguyen was 1 for 2 with a run scored and Shayan Eldridge 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Portola and Uni meet again on Friday at University.
WOODBRIDGE VS. LAGUNA HILLS
Woodbridge captured the second game of the series with a 3-1 victory on Wednesday in Laguna Hills.
Vincent DeMarco pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing one earned run and striking out five. Anthony DeMarco had two hits and a run scored for Woodbridge.
Woodbridge opened the series with a 7-4 victory over the Hawks (4-4, 2-3) on Tuesday at Ryan Lemmon Stadium. DeMarco had a hit, scored two runs and had an RBI, Skyler Miura had two hits and a run scored and Henry Uhrik had two hits and two RBI for the Warriors.
The teams play again Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.
