Mission Viejo High School’s girls flag football team, coached by Chris Watkins, has started off the season 2-0 in the first CIF approved season for the sport.
The Diablos started the season with two wins Saturday in the Beckman Showcase. Mission Viejo defeated Crean Lutheran 24-14 and University 12-7.
Top players for Mission Viejo were senior quarterback/defensive back Claire Parnell, who had six touchdowns and 337 yards passing; junior tailback/defensive back Audrey Kays, who rushed for 21 times for 169 yards, an average of eight yards per carries and also had five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown and sophomore wide receiver/linebacker Nora Biornstad, who had seven catches for 87 yards and three touchdowns and seven flag pulls on defense.
Also contributing to the wins were freshman wide receiver/defensive back Leah Vanderveen, who had 10 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, wide receiver/defensive back, captain Avery Brewster, who had three catches for 46 yards and five flag pulls on defense and senior wide receiver/defensive back Cadence Neale, who had two interceptions on defense and one TD catch for 17 yards.
Mission Viejo hosts Santa Margarita Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
