Corona del Mar’s baseball team salvaged the final game in a three-game series against Newport Harbor, defeating the Sailors 6-5 Thursday afternoon in a Wave League game at CdM.
The Sea Kings (16-8-1, 3-4) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and held on for the win.
Jarrett Thompson (3-3) got the victory. Ryan Borquez threw two perfect innings and Tanner Ivey got the save.
CdM had 10 hits, led by Luke Joyce who was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Reece Berger was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Luc Stuka was 1-2 with a home run and two walks.
Clay Liolios hit a two-run home run for Newport Harbor (14-7, 4-3) in the fifth inning to cut the Sea Kings lead to 5-4.
Newport Harbor loaded the bases in the seventh inning but Ivey was able to force a groundout to end the game.
“It was a great team win for us,” said CdM Coach Kevin McCaffrey. “We let one slip away on Tuesday (Newport Harbor won 7-6) and it was good to see our boys battle back. Things got scary there in the seventh but Tanner did a great job to get us out of it.”
