Beckman High School officials on Tuesday named Lucas Armstrong as the new varsity boys basketball coach.

Armstrong replaces John Goins, who stepped down as Beckman coach after six seasons. Goins will continue to teach at Beckman.

“Lucas brings over nine years of coaching experience to the Beckman boys basketball program,” said Athletic Director Steve Fischel. “As the son of a legendary San Diego area basketball coach, Coach Armstrong has lived a basketball life since a young age.”

Armstrong recently finished his first season at Beckman High School where he served as the head coach for the sophomore team and was also an assistant varsity coach, Fischel said.

Before coming to Beckman, Armstrong had coaching stints at West Hills High School and Westview High School in the San Diego Section. He spent seven seasons at West Hills and two seasons at Westview.

Armstrong led West Hills to five straight CIF San Diego Section playoff appearances from 2011 to 2016.

In addition, his 2013-14 his team was 16-9 and ranked No. 5 in Division III. His 2014-15 Wolf Pack team moved up a division and finished 17-10, losing in the section quarterfinals.

In 2015-16 West Hills had a 22-7 record and finished the season ranked No. 12 in San Diego County by the San Diego Union Tribune, Fischel added. The team ended up losing in the Division II section semifinals to eventual CIF champion, La Jolla Country Day. Armstrong also spent two seasons coaching golf at Westview.

“Coach Armstrong recently moved to South Orange County where he currently works as an assistant commissioner for a collegiate athletic conference in Aliso Viejo,” Fischel said. “Other than the game of basketball, Armstrong enjoys golfing, yoga and traveling.”

Beckman officials also released a statement from Armstrong:

“Beckman has an incredible community of support, and there is great potential for our boys basketball program thanks to the foundation Coach Goins has laid. I can’t wait to get started and begin this next challenge in my career. I hope to foster a positive student-athlete experience for every basketball player that puts on a Patriots jersey.”
