CJ Cooper has been named the new boys basketball coach at Capistrano Valley Christian High School, Athletic Director Lucas Armstrong said Friday.
“Coach Cooper brings an outstanding combination of high-level playing experience, coaching expertise, and a passion for developing young men,” Armstrong said. “He played collegiately at the University of Texas-El Paso where he ranks among the top three in program history in three-pointers made, and is also in the top 10 in assists and games played. Prior to his collegiate career, he was a two-time CIF and state champion at the high school level.”
After his playing career, Cooper began coaching at UTEP, first as a graduate assistant before being promoted to assistant coach.
During the past eight seasons, he has served as the associate head coach at JSerra. Cooper is also the Founder and Director of DnC Basketball, where he leads the 15-and-under team.
“I am extremely excited to join the CVCS family,” Cooper said in a statement. “I look forward to developing our student-athletes and helping them maximize their potential in faith, academics and athletics.”
“We are thrilled to have Coach Cooper leading our basketball program and investing in the lives of our student-athletes,” Armstrong added. “His experience, character, and commitment to excellence make him a tremendous addition to the CVCS family.”
Capo Valley Christian was 13-16 overall and 0-6 in the San Joaquin League last season under Jon Bahnsen, who was head coach the last three years and was an assistant with the program before then.
“I want to sincerely thank Coach Bahnsen for his time, effort, and commitment that he has poured into our student-athletes and the basketball program over the past three seasons as varsity head coach,” Armstrong told OC Sports Zone. “We are grateful for the investment he has made in our student-athletes lives.”
