Capo Valley Christian’s football team mixed the run and the pass to prevail 35-7 over University on a hot and windy Saturday afternoon at Aliso Viejo High School.
On the first play from scrimmage CVC’s Luke Vincent ran 66 yards to the University six-yard line to set the tone.
Three plays later he scored on a 1-yard run. The senior running back carried the ball 25 times for 232 yards and three touchdowns while also catching three passes for 19 yards.
Senior quarterback Drake Bothwell completed 17 of 30 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Just before halftime, he connected with senior wide receiver Rocco Windham on a 16-yard strike to give the Eagles a 28-0 lead. Windham had six catches for 55 yards.
University got on the board in the third quarter with a 31-yard catch and run scoring play down the right sideline from junior pivot Dylan Elmer to senior wide receiver Arvin Jahangiri.
Jahangiri had three receptions for 57 yards after missing almost his entire junior season due to an injury in his first game. Elmer completed nine of 24 passes for 143 yards. His favorite target was senior Cruz McMullens who caught five of those throws for 51 yards.
CVC amassed 20 first downs (12 on the ground, seven via the air and one via penalty). University had just seven first downs, but did force four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles).
University senior Jake Rabold did a little bit of everything with a fumble recovery, an interception, two deep kickoffs (one a touchback), two punts over 60 yards (one that rolled out of bounds at the six-yard line) and an extra point kick.
Eagle sophomore Gavin Gizzi kicked five extra points and caught two passes for 35 yards, including a 27-yard scoring strike.
CVC (1-1) plays at Laguna Hills (1-1) on Friday while University (0-1) hosts Los Amigos (2-0) on Thursday.
