St. Margaret’s Episcopal School officials announced this week that Jonathan Hughes has been named the head varsity boys basketball coach.
Hughes, who has been head girls basketball coach at Calvary Chapel the past two years, replaces Chris Nordstrom, who resigned at the end of the past season. St. Margaret’s was 17-11 overall and finished second in the Orange Coast League with a 9-3 record last season.
Hughes enjoyed success coaching both the boys and girls programs at Calvary Chapel. The Calvary Chapel girls team tied a school record of 24 wins in the 2022-23 season and a first-place in the Orange Coast League the past two years.
Before his stint as Calvary Chapel’s girls coach, Hughes led the boys program to a CIF championship in 2021 and undefeated Orange Coast League championships in 2020 and 2021.
Hughes was named CIF Coach of the Year in 2021 and Orange Coast League Coach of the Year in 2020, 2021 and 2022. Hughes has also served as Calvary Chapel’s Athletic Director since 2016.
“We are thrilled to announce Jon Hughes as our new head boys basketball coach. Jon brings a championship-level resume while being a top head coach in the Orange County high school basketball arena for more than 10 years,” said St. Margaret’s Director of Athletics Dan O’Shea. “We welcome Jon and his family to the Tartan school community and look forward to the work ahead, beginning with our summer basketball camps here at St. Margaret’s.”
“I would like to thank the administration and leadership of St. Margaret’s for the opportunity to lead the boys basketball program. I am very excited to meet the student-athletes and their families and to hit the ground running this summer,” Hughes said. “I have a great passion for basketball and growing the game; I can’t wait to get started.”
