CREAN LUTHERAN 9, PALOMA VALLEY 8: Crean Lutheran, which advanced into the playoffs as an at-large team, stunned No. 2 seed Paloma Valley Thursday on the road. Brennan Bates belted a two-run home run to lift Crean Lutheran to the win.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these guys taking the challenge against the number two seed who is 27-1 on the season,” said Crean Lutheran Coach Jake Haney. “The only chance we had was to let it all hang out and compete through all the adversity for seven innings. That was a really good team that we beat today and I feel bad for those guys, but I am beyond excited for our guys to get to play at least one more game.

“Brennan Bates with that big home run to give us the eighth and ninth runs provided the cushion we needed. That’s going to be a memory that he will never forget for the rest of his life.”

Walker Richardson and Harrison Stiles also had two RBI and Jackson Haney was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for Crean Lutheran. Davis Rutten was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

BRENTWOOD 4, UNIVERSITY 1: After winning five straight games to make the CIF playoffs for the first time since 2012, University fell to The Brentwood School in Los Angeles Thursday.

The game featured each team’s ace (Evan Alexander for Brentwood and Cooper Berger for University) and was a pitchers’ duel through most of the game, with each pitcher notching eight strikeouts. University broke through in the top of the second. With two outs Jameson LoBianco singled to right followed by Luke Emrich’s single to left. Shay Eldridge drove in LoBianco with a single to center.

Berger faced only nine batters through the first three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Senior captain Tyler Stoops hit a sky high, wind aided homer just clearing the left field fence to the delight of the home crowd.

The game remained tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the sixth. Bradley Selma singled to right and stole second a third while two of his teammates struck out. Alexander helped his cause by doubling to right giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead. The next hitter, Tory Hampton unloaded a home run over the left field fence for the final margin.

In the top of the seventh, Blaine Anderson led off with a single, but was erased on a double play grounder to third base. The next batter for the Trojans was a pinch hitter who drew a walk. After a discussion with the umpires, it was determined that the substitution was not properly reported to the home plate umpire even though the batter was announced by the public address announcer.

It was a tough way to end the season for the Trojans, who finished 14-15. Second year Coach Wes Shaw and the program will have many good memories. Brentwood (11-6) moves on to the second round.
