Woodbridge’s Maddie Lyon and Mater Dei’s Titan Ruotolo stand out at national meet

Woodridge High’s Maddie Lyon and Mater Dei’s Titan Ruotolo both had outstanding performances last weekend at the New Balance Indoor National Championships in Manhattan, NY.

Lyon, a standout junior on the Woodbridge track and field team competed in the championship flight of the triple jump event. She made it to the top eight and advanced to the finals, eventually finishing seventh overall out of 37 national competitors.

Lyon has personal best marks of 39-9 in the triple jump and 18-10 in the long jump which were both number one in California among juniors.

Lyon was a 2018 state finalist finishing 10th in the triple jump. She was also on the 2018 CIF runner-up Woodbridge team and won the Arcadia Invitational open section triple jump championship.

This season, her goals are to win a CIF championship and make the podium at the state meet.

Ruotolo, from Mater Dei, finished 26th overall in the triple jump at the New York meet.

Ruotolo had an outstanding 2018 season, jumping 46-7 to earn a CIF triple jump championship but he fell shy of qualifying for the state championships.

This year he made the decision to drop football and focus all of his attention into track and field, according to his club coach Keinan Briggs.

He has already opened up with a state leading 47-8 triple jump.
