Bob Flint seems to be enjoying his latest coaching assignment as Northwood High’s pitching coach.

“This is great stuff,” said Flint, a former head coach at Irvine and Woodbridge.

Flint, 74, came out of retirement, again, to join Coach Rob Stuart’s staff. He seems to be having an impact with the Timberwolves’ pitching staff. On Tuesday, Arthur Liu and Justin Bonnell combined to limit University to four hits in the Timberwolves 3-1 victory over the Trojans. (Please click here to see the game story)

Northwood is tied for second place with Irvine in the PCL with a 4-2 record.

Last spring, Woodbridge held a retirement ceremony for Flint, who had been an assistant coach with the Warriors. John Emme, who was CdM’s head coach, was also honored that evening.

But Flint decided to come back and was the target of some good natured jokes by his friends and coaching colleagues.

“People were on me, I just fail at it,” Flint said of retirement plans. “We all fail at something, I’m a total failure at retirement.”

Flint said coaching remains satisfying.

“I still get a charge out of coaching a kid and then he executes what you’re ask him to do and you see the happy in his face, it’s pretty cool, it’s a good thing,” Flint said.
