Woodbridge off to a 4-0 Pacific Coast League start under new coach Steve Scoggin

Woodbridge High’s boys basketball team is off to a fast start under first-year coach Steve Scoggin.

The Warriors are 5-2 overall and have started out Pacific Coast League play 4-0.

“Yes, the team is playing well,” Scoggin said. “It is not over yet there is still a lot of work to do. This league is a tough league, every game is a battle. The one thing that I love about this team is that every night there can be a different leading scorer. We are a very unselfish group. 

“Nygle Williams and Marly Jaisel (both juniors) have been very consistent all year. Our seniors Eli Hill and Marcus Hooshmand have been the glue. They have been doing so much for our team that doesn’t show up in the stat sheet.  Our backup point guard sophomore Ethan Fu has stepped into a big role this year and has taken advantage of his time. “

Woodbridge remained undefeated in league play with a 44-41 overtime victory over Beckman Tuesday.

Jaisel had 18 points and nine rebounds and seven of the team’s nine points in overtime. Williams grabbed 15 rebounds.

“Beckman does a great job on defense with their zone and slowing the game down,” Scoggin said. “John Goins (Beckman coach) does a great job with his players they are well coached, we knew we had to come focused.  I knew Nygle would have a tough night scoring against their zone and their two big’s but he draws so much attention down there it opens the court for our guards.  Eli Hill came up big in overtime with a loose ball and got fouled and hit two big free throws.  I am very proud of this group but it is not over. There is a lot of work to be done.”

Jaisel has led the team averaging 12 points and six rebounds a game. Williams is averaging 10 points and 12 rebounds and Josh Lomboy is averaging 10 points a game.
