Woodbridge girls capture first and boys third at Mt. SAC Spring Meet of Champions

It was a big day Saturday for the Woodbridge High School swim program at the Spring Meet of Champions at Mt. SAC in Walnut.

The girls team took first place in the varsity division while the boys squad earned third place with 475 in its division.

“Their combined efforts propelled Woodbridge to an overall victory in the varsity division,” said James Hickson, who coaches both teams.

Senior Zara Masud, a Georgia Tech commit, led the way for the girls capturing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:48.18 and the 100-yard butterfly in 54.01, according to Hickson. She was named swimmer of the meet.

Woodbridge senior Jacob Wang, a UC San Diego commit, took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.58 seconds and junior Robin Koehler captured fourth place in 21.39, the coach said.

In addition, the girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Bella Parker (24.19), Masud (23.85), Annie Fishburn (24.25), and Addison Gramlich (24.13) notched a winning time of 1:36.42.

And the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team comprised of Wang (20.67), Cole Saeger (21.24), Dean Ko (21.43), and Koehler (21.16) finished in first with a time of 1:24.50.

“The 200-yard medley relay showcased another thrilling performance with the team of Dean Ko (backstroke, 24.67), Matthew Ko (breaststroke, 26.38), Wang (butterfly, 22.07), and Koehler (freestyle, 20.58) securing second place with a 1:33.70,” Hickson said.

“Freshman Bella Parker also impressed, taking second place in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal best of 23.97 seconds to crack the 24-second barrier for the first time.”Woodbridge showed its depth in the meet.

“Throughout the event, Woodbridge demonstrated depth by placing at least one swimmer in every A final on the girls’ side,” Hickson said.
