Woodbridge celebrates program’s 25th league title and gets ready for CIF playoffs

Woodbridge High School’s softball team clinched the Pacific Coast League title Wednesday night, defeating University 15-0 at Deanna Manning Stadium in the final regular season game of the year.

It marked the 25th league title for the program.

The Warriors (13-7-1, 11-1) will find out Saturday morning their draw for the CIF playoffs that begin next week. As a league champion, Woodbridge is expected to get a home game for the first round. Woodbridge’s only league loss came Monday when Irvine recorded an 8-5 win.

In Wednesday’s victory, Woodbridge was led by shortstop Anna Kim, who went 3 for 3 with three runs scored, according to head coach Kim Wojciechowski, Seniors Ariel Cardenas, Corynn Crabb and Alexis Martinez also contributed to the win. Cardenas pitched the final two innings to preserve the shutout. Martinez was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBI.

Crabb made an excellent running catch in the fourth inning to help preserve the shutout.

Woodbridge has been lead by Wojciechowski, the head coach and assistant coach Jerry Rose.

The season has meant a lot to both coaches. Wojciechowski is a Woodbridge alumnus and former player. Rose has been coaching at Woodbridge for 18 years but had to step down last year when he got sick and couldn’t fulfill his duties as head coach, Rose said. He was able to return this year as an assistant coach. 

“Every season, our team starts with a vision of where we want to be at the end of it,” said Wojciechowski. “The hard work, positive attitude and effort this group put in this season on and off the field allowed them to fullfill our vision.”

“The amazing blend of the player personalities, sportsmanship, work ethic and talent made this season special,” Rose added.

Former long-time Woodbridge coach and softball legend Alan Dugard was also part of the staff this year, coming out to work with infielders sharing his softball wisdom, the coaches said.
